Francis Specker/CBSAdele, One Direction, Little Mix and Drake are among the winners of this year’s Brit Awards, the U.K. equivalent of the Grammys.
Adele was given a special Global Success Award, but she wasn’t there to accept it in person — or to dedicate it to Beyonce. She sent an acceptance video instead, which showed her standing in front of a fake tree. “I’m somewhere pretty dry — hence the fake bush behind me, to make it look like I’m somewhere nice,” she explained.
Speaking of Beyonce, she was named Best International Female, while Drake won Best International Male. The Best British Video award went to One Direction, while Little Mix won Best Single for “Shout Out to My Ex.” The song was widely interpreted as having been inspired by ex-One Direction member Zayn Malik, who broke off his engagement to Little Mix member Perrie Edwards.
Emeli Sandé was named Best British Female Solo Artist, while The 1975 took Best British Group. Late rock icon David Bowie was named Best British Male Solo artist and his album Blackstar, released days before his death, won Best British Album.
Rag N’ Bone Man, whose song “Human” is nowmaking inroads on the charts in the U.S., was named Best British Breakthrough Act.
Performers on the show included Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, Little Mix and a duet between Coldplay and the Chainsmokers. Coldplay’s Chris Martin also paid tribute to the late George Michael during the show.
